Welcome to our Library!

Early Childhood Library Program

The experience of children in the Early Childhood program is enriched by a weekly visit with the school librarian.  Students are exposed to a diverse selection of developmentally appropriate literature, finger-plays, and songs that are thematically linked to classroom explorations.  Interactive read-aloud activities play an important role in developing and reinforcing early literacy skills, vocabulary development and a life-long love of reading.  Tactile experiences of handling books engage students in the discovery of literature and visual literacy.  Pre-Kindergarten students begin to learn to take care of library resources by checking out books to keep in their classroom.  Books are available for every student at the Ross School, the library provides an Early Childhood Family Check-out Program.

Elementary Library Program

The education of Ross elementary students is supported and enhanced by the integrated library program.  All students have access to the library and are able to check-out books.  The library provides a quality diverse selection of materials for joyful independent reading as well as classroom research needs.  Students engage in a variety of lessons involving thematically integrated read-alouds, using interactive-media, learning how to find and choose materials, as well as an introduction to research methodology.   Children are encouraged to discover and seek out the magic and joy in literature.  Students are guided in their quest to become independent information seekers, an important part of being a 21st Century learner.

Library Class News

Pre-nursery is in the midst of studying Snow!  The class is discovering the wonderful properties that make snow unique: crunchy, cold, wet, fun for "zooming," building snow men, making snow angels.  The class has been reading books about snow with the librarian, seeing characters who play in the snow just like them!

Nursery is exploring the Night.  What is Night?  Students have been learning all about the darkness, moon, stars and the critters that live in the night.  Library story times include the books: Kittens First Full Moon, by Kevin Henkes; Night Cat by Margaret Beames; Snowmen at Night, by Caralyn Buehner; The Napping House by Audrey Wood.

Pre-Kindergarten has started an investigation into the literature of fairy tales.  In the classroom, students are introduced to traditional fairy tales and in the library they are introduced to fractured fairy tales.  Pre-K loved hearing The Princess and the Pea, as retold by Janet Stevens, as well as Kate and the Beanstalk, by Mary Pope Osborne.

Kindergarten has been studying babies and beginnings.  What is a beginning?  How do we all begin? The class has enjoyed library story times that have included: Big Mama Makes the World, by Phyllis Root; Granite Baby, by Lynne Bertrand; Mrs. Chicken and the Hungry Crocodile, by Won-Ldy Paye; and Guji Guji, by Zhiyuan Chen.
